The E half dim chord is very similar to the E minor chord that only one note differs from E minor the (+11), but some of the notes of the D# dim chord are outside of E Minor. He then descends down two diminished type chords, E half dim and D# dim in the second bar. Then he plays the 5th(B) and 8-root(E) again going up, then plays the D#(major7th) and Bb(+11), (also a half step above the stated tonality. He then arpeggiates again the 1-3-5 of the chord, goes up a half step to F, a note outside the stated harmony, and just like Andrew mentioned, the F happens to be a half step above where he begin the previous phrase (E). The first note is G, the third of E, pretty standard, Coltrane quite often begins phrases on the third of the chord. More than any other Jazz artist, John Coltrane has always represented to me, the most beautiful balance when it comes to what is commonly referred to as 'Playing Outside The Changes' so I thought it would be fun to take a look at a phrase in that context. He mentioned the word, Polydiatonicism, and I had never heard Coltrane's music explained in that way, and well. I don't know much about what Andrew White mentions in this video, I have to read his book Trane And Me, but I thought it would be fun to dissect the line he brackets and see what is there. He transcribed every Coltrane solo from his albums with Miles, every Coltrane solo from the albums of John Coltrane with his Quartet, and if you have transcribed yourself, you know, writing these solos out is not as easy as it looks.
